As I was walking out of Marie Callender's with my mom yesterday after a little lunch (we always stop for a bite to eat after she goes to the doctor ... Marie Callendar's is right on our way!), I noticed a little patch of flowers along the sidewalk. Purples, yellows, oranges ... it made me realize that we don't have much more time to enjoy them before we are into the cold grayness of winter. There are things I love about winter (freshly fallen snow, the holidays, curling up in front of the fireplace with a good book), but being COLD is not one of them!!
I am trying to appreciate more and more the time I get to spend with my mom as well. Gone are the days of her putting my hair up in rollers on Saturday night for church on Sunday morning ... long sessions of trying on dance costumes she was making for me for the umpteenth time to make sure they were going to fit ... shopping trips for new school clothes ... coming home to the smell of beef and homemade noodles and mashed potatoes (starchonstarch .... soooooo good!). I am amazed at how quickly the years have passed, But I am totally grateful that I have the opportunity to pay her back, in any small way I can, and take care of her some for all the years she has taken care of me ... physically, emotionally, spiritually. She has always been the greatest example of selflessness of anyone I have ever known. While doctor's visits and trips to the hospital are NO fun, being together with my mom is a priceless gift. I am so happy to have her as part of my life. Love you, Mom ... (I know she will never actually see this, as she practically doesn't even know/care how to turn a computer ON, but it feels good to acknowledge my gratitude for her, anyway).
Enjoy the weekend, friends!!

Wendy, love your Mom every single moment you have together! My Mom has been gone for 5 years and I still miss her so much!
ReplyDeleteMy mom used to do that too! Plus she used Dippity Doo on my hair! Remember that?
ReplyDeleteGale

Wendy, Your ode to your Mom is a ode to Moms everywhere. I teared up because you expressed much of what I feel caring for my Mom. After caring for her at home for 6 years, she has CHF and Lewy Bodies Disease and is totally dependent, the next bridge is fast approaching. She asked me this week not to give up on her . . . I reassured it I'd never give up on her no matter where she lived. Heart wrneching!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the lighthearted dippity doo reminder -- I'd forgotten! debra
Super cute card. Your mom may not ever see this on your blog, but you should print it out and give it to her if you haven't. She should see such a loving tribute. Oh yes, I remember dippity doo too lol
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful tribute to your mom! Love the card and the sentiment behind it. I am 40++ and my mom passed suddenly 6 months after our 10-year-old son 10 years ago. And there are still so many times I want to pick up the phone & call her, because just hearing her voice made everything better. Now I know why you are the incredible person you are....you learned by example. xoxo
ReplyDeleteBeautiful post Wendy! You are so right in that we have to appreciate every moment with our loved ones. I'm so glad you will always be there for your Mom (as I will be for my parents). May times, I see the opposite, and it is truly heart-breaking.
ReplyDeleteAdorable card, Wendy! This is so colorful and fresh!
ReplyDeleteAnd, there is a Marie Callendar's restaraunt?! Wow, I may need to visit UT after all!
I have been meaning to tell you that your blog looks amazing!
He IS Able!
